Paul Hyman Mentoring Program APPLICATIONS REOPENED Due Aug 18

Re-opeing the 2016-2017 Paula E. Hyman Mentoring Program

To advance the field of Jewish Women’s and Gender Studies and to honor the memory of Paula E. Hyman, Hebrew Union College and the Jewish Theological Seminary, with the support of the AJS and its Women’s Caucus, established a mentoring program for emerging scholars in the field. In this third year of the program we will again select a small group of emerging scholars and pair them with senior scholar mentors. They will be asked to meet, either in person or virtually, bimonthly and will stay an extra day at the 2016 AJS Conference at the program’s expense in order to discuss professional issues including moving from dissertation to book, landing one’s first position, thinking strategically about advancement, and balancing life and work.

Applications are welcomed from both non-tenure track and tenure-track scholars, as well as from scholars in non-traditional fields and independent scholars, who have received or will have received their Ph.D. degrees between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2016. Applicants must be current members of the Association for Jewish Studies and the AJS Women’s Caucus. You may establish or renew your membership(s) at http://www.ajsnet.org/enroll.htm. Mentors will be approached in consultation with the mentees.

Applications will consist of:
• Cover Letter including:
o Contact information
o Description of dissertation research and any other subsequent publications
o A one to two paragraph description of what you would like to achieve through participation in the mentoring program
o Names of three senior scholars as possible mentors with a sentence or two explaining why you chose each one. Please do not contact potential mentors; the Committee often goes beyond the applicant’s suggestions.
• Curriculum Vitae
• Contact information for two academic references

Materials should be submitted electronically to ajswomenscaucus@gmail.com with “Hyman Mentoring Program application” in the subject line by Thursday, August 18, 2016. We hope to complete the selection process by mid-September 2016.
